It may not be gold, but you could call it green: It's a low-flow toilet, conserving water by sending only 1.6 gallons down the drain per flush. Given that it has been more than 50 years since Isotta Fraschini last made a car, it may not be possible for the modern automobile enthusiast to fully appreciate the significance of the 8C Monterosa project without some background. A shy woman may not want to see her name written in the sky, for instance, while a more outgoing girl may be thrilled by a very public proposal. Lake Buchanan is more than 23,000 acres and is the largest of the Highland Lakes. Zilker Park (2100 Barton Springs Rd) and the Town Lake Trail are literally across the street, so enjoy a leisurely stroll or a jaunt on a canoe or kayak. It's popular for good reason so, since a visit to Austin just isn't complete without a stop at Lake Travis, go to the best-kept secret on the water: Krause Springs, located about 34 miles west of Austin.
Assembly of the prototypes was complicated by a shortage of available materials after 1945. Rapi and his colleagues drove hundreds of miles with a bare chassis made roadworthy with the addition of simple fenders and a windscreen. Tipo SB chassis was nearly $10,000 when a complete 1931 V-16 Cadillac cost at most about $8,800. In spring 1931, the improved Tipo 8B was introduced. The first drafts, which were based on conventional automotive technology, were completed in 1938 and eventually included a more advanced version of the last Tipo 8B of 1934. Over the years, however, he discarded all traditional design details. More remarkable, however, were the two impressive convertibles made by Carozzeria Boneschi. By 1924, the year in which a more powerful Tipo 8A was first shown, sales branches had been established in London, Brussels, New York, Buenos Aires, and other cities with their fair share of extremely well-heeled motorists. In 1943, the so-called Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8C car began exhibiting the characteristics for which it would be known. Intent both on keeping Isotta Fraschini focused on building aero engines for Italy's rearmament and opposing foreign investment, the government prohibited all further contact with the Americans.
Messrs. Isotta and Fraschini bowed out of the firm's affairs in 1922. The succeeding ownership, headed by Count Lodovico Mazzotti, undertook negotiations with none other than Henry Ford in 1930-1931 for a manufacturing deal that could have pumped new life into the Milanese factory's car-making operations. While the battlefields claimed their terrible tributes, the men working in the Isotta Fraschini factory struggled to stay abreast of technical progress despite their ongoing shift work. Tanger Factory Outlet Center (4015 S IH 35 South, San Marcos) has less luxury and more mainstream outlets (The Gap, Banana Republic, Nike) and is also worth a stop. The origins of the Brockway Motor Truck Company can be traced to 1851, when William Brockway established a carriage factory in Homer, New York. It's quite tasty and can almost be a meal unto itself, which is possible if you settle for an appetizer with it instead of a standard meal.
A three-speed transmission remained standard equipment, but a four-speed Wilson pre-selective gearbox could be ordered. Options included Hurst four-speed manual transmission, power steering, air conditioning, electric window lifts, tinted glass, AM/FM radio, Eppe fog or driving lights, limited-slip differential, Magnum 500 chrome wheels, and Firestone bias-ply or Michelin radial tires. Start at Sixth Street and Lamar with Girl Next Door (500 North Lamar), done up in girly pink and brown and offering L.A. Book a room at the Mobil Three-Star InterContinental Stephen F. Austin Hotel (701 Congress Ave), where there's a great bar overlooking Sixth Street. Move on to By George (524 North Lamar; 2346 Guadalupe), an Austin institution for hip chicks and dudes of all ages. Don't miss a stop at Waterloo Records (600 North Lamar), Austin's fiercely independently music store that has given many musicians their start, and pick up compilation discs from local radio station KGSR 107.1 as gifts for music-loving friends. Wrap up the day with a stop at Central Market (4001 North Lamar, at 38th & Lamar), where the incredible (and huge!) Cobb salad is a great choice for noshing.
